ALBUQUERQUE POLICE DEPARTMENT2+ weeks agoAgencyTax season is here! 💼💰 While it's an important time to get your finances in order, it's also prime time for scammers to prey on unsuspecting individuals. Here are some tips to keep your tax information safe: 1. Watch out for phishing scams: Be cautious of emails or messages claiming to be from the IRS or tax preparation services asking for personal information. The IRS will never contact you via email, text, or social media to request sensitive information. 2. Secure your personal information: Keep your Social Security number, tax documents, and financial records in a safe place. Shred any outdated documents before disposing of them. 3. Use secure filing methods: File your taxes electronically using a secure internet connection. If you're mailing your tax return, use certified mail to ensure it reaches its destination safely. 4. Choose reputable tax preparers: If you're seeking professional help with your taxes, do your research and select a trusted tax preparer or accountant. Avoid preparers who promise larger refunds than others or base their fees on a percentage of your refund. 5. Monitor your accounts: Regularly review your bank statements, credit reports, and tax transcripts for any suspicious activity. Report any discrepancies or unauthorized transactions immediately. Stay vigilant and protect yourself from tax-related scams. Remember, it's better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your finances!3Like
ALBUQUERQUE POLICE DEPARTMENTa week agoAgencyThe Albuquerque Police Department is warning the public of a possible scam impersonating APD Chief of Police Harold Medina. The reports received by APD are that a caller contacted someone by phone stating they were Chief Medina. The person stated on the call that they were contacting them because they were speaking with an underage female on a social media app and that her parents wanted to press charges. The number on the call showed up as an actual phone line at the police department. The line disconnected and another call then came through stating the person needed to send money to pay for medical bills for the minor. The person on the line also provided a badge number. The public is reminded that the Albuquerque Police Department would never contact individuals and request or demand any form of payment over the phone. Individuals are encouraged to report these types of scam calls to 242-COPS. They can also report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.77Like

ALBUQUERQUE POLICE DEPARTMENT2+ weeks agoAgencyAPD Auto Theft Unit Recovers 8 Vehicles in a Chop Shop APD’s Auto Theft Unit recovered 8 stolen vehicles, 2 stolen trailers and uncovered a possible chop shop operation in Albuquerque’s South Valley. During late December, APD’s Auto Theft Unit was conducting a proactive operation in southeast Albuquerque when they observed a white Ford F-350 with a busted window being driven by a Hispanic female. Detectives discovered the female driver did not match the description of the registered owner of the F-350. The registered owner was contacted and told detectives his truck had been stolen earlier that day with a white trailer attached. Detectives followed the reported stolen vehicle to 8307 Los Padillas SW, where they observed multiple vehicles in different stages of dismantlement and multiple pieces of vehicles were scattered throughout the property. Detectives continued to conduct surveillance on the property and later obtained a search warrant for the stolen vehicle, and possible chop shop operation. APD detectives are working to obtain an arrest warrant for the property owner. In 2022, APD pushed for legislation to address chop shop operations at a time when auto theft and catalytic converter theft was high. The legislation passed in 2022 and officers are now able to charge individuals who own, operate, maintain, control or conduct operations in a chop shop or those who know or should have known it was a chop shop. The chop shop law allows officers to address auto theft from all aspects; from the vehicle being stolen, to possessing the vehicle, to dismantling or altering the vehicle. Detectives intend to prosecute this case through the Office of Superintendent of Insurance.87Like
