ORANGE COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE2+ weeks agoAgencySon of Man Who Posed as Home Security Company Employee to Steal Jewelry, Credit Cards from Elderly Victims also Charged in Theft Full Press Release: https://bit.ly/3UQkTko SANTA ANA, Calif. – The son of a man who impersonated a home security company employee to trick elderly victims into letting him inside their homes in order to steal jewelry, cash, and credit cards has been charged in helping his father carry out one of the burglaries. The victims ranged in age from 79 to 88 years old, including one woman who was legally blind. Authorities believe there are additional victims in Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. If you believe you may be a victim, call the Anaheim Police Department at (714) 328-8153 or Orange County Crime Stoppers at (855) TIP-OCCS. Jacinto Chavez, 37, was charged last month with five felony counts of first-degree burglary and two felony counts of theft from an elder adult exceeding $950, and three misdemeanor counts of elder theft. He faces a maximum sentence of 11 years and four months in state prison if convicted of all charges. Chavez’ son, Jeramiah, 19, has since been charged with one felony count of first-degree burglary and one felony count of theft from an elder. He faces a maximum sentence of six years in state prison if convicted of both counts. Father and son have pleaded not guilty to the charges and are scheduled to return to court for a pretrial hearing on April 9 in Department N3 of the North Justice Center. Over a four-month period, between August and November 2023, Jacinto Chavez is accused of targeting elderly residents in Anaheim who displayed home security signs outside their homes. He is accused of wearing a badge that identified him as a Brinks home security employee. After gaining the victims’ trust, Jacinto Chavez is accused of stealing jewelry, credit cards and credit card information. On at least one occasion, his son Jeremiah Chavez is accused of joining him to steal from an elderly woman in Anaheim. “These victims subscribed to a home security company to protect themselves from crime. And instead of preventing them from becoming victims, that security system is what Chavez and his son used to target them – and steal their precious jewelry, credit cards, and cash – all while pretending to be someone who is helping to keep them safe,” said Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer. “There are few things more despicable than someone who is willing to lie right to an elderly person’s face and rob them with a smile on their face.” Deputy District Attorney Gerard Gully of the Gangs/Target Unit is prosecuting this case.94Like

ORANGE COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICEyesterdayAgencyWhen we put up billboards across Orange County and on major freeways coming into our county warning thieves that if they steal, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office will prosecute, it wasn’t just a catchy slogan. We mean it. Apparently this gentleman was too busy stealing at the Outlets at Orange to see our giant billboard in the middle of the shopping center that reads “Crime Doesn’t Pay in Orange County.” Thankfully, the undercover officers from the California Highway Patrol Border Division Organized Retail Crime Task Force and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office understood the assignment and arrested him – right under our billboard. We told you - crime doesn’t pay in Orange County. Now you know. And knowing is half the battle. #crimedoesntpayinOC #knowingishalfthebattle #ifyoustealweprosecute #CHP1152Like

Jonathan Lopez, 31, of Orange has been charged with one felony count of murder, one felony count of hit and run with permanent injury or death, one felony count of evading while driving recklessly, one felony count of DUI with three or more priors and one felony count of driving with a blood alcohol level of .08% or higher. He also faces one misdemeanor count of driving on a suspended license. Lopez faces a maximum sentence of 18 years to life in state prison if convicted of all charges. The victim has not yet been identified. On March 12, 2024, Lopez was driving in the 500 block of Tustin Avenue in Orange at around 11:15 a.m., when he is accused of hitting a man walking across a street. After striking the man, Lopez is accused of driving away before being located by police a short time later. He then led police on a short high-speed pursuit, running a red light and three stop signs before being arrested. Lopez has five prior DUI convictions, dating back to 2011. He pleaded guilty in December 2021 to one felony count of driving under the influence of alcohol, one felony count of driving with a blood alcohol level of .08% or higher and one misdemeanor count of driving with a suspended license. He was sentenced to 16 months in county jail. “An innocent man is dead because someone without a license who has been prohibited from driving because of his extensive DUI history decided to ignore every warning he was ever given that drinking and driving can be deadly and get behind the wheel while intoxicated,” said Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer. “It is clear this individual has absolutely no regard for human life and no respect for the rule of law. Not even jail time could prevent him from putting his own selfish actions over the lives of everyone else on the road that day. This time he’s being charged with a Watson murder because locking him up for decades is going to be the only way from him killing anyone else.” A criminal complaint sets forth criminal accusations against a defendant who is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. Senior Deputy District Attorney Brian Orue of the Homicide Unit is prosecuting this case.233Like
