A chara,

Is croílár na Gaeilge í Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin i nDoire. Tá muid ag dul i ngleic le ciorruithe an Chomhairle.

Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin is the heart of the Irish language and cultural community in Derry. We are fighting against cuts to core funding from Derry City and Strabane District Council.

Creidimid gur linne ar fad an teanga Gaeilge agus an cultúr Gaelach, agus ba chóir go mbeidh an teanga agus an cultúr ag achan duine. Gach seachtain, cuirimid fáilte roimh 400 bhfoghlaimeoirí Gaeilge, sa fhoirgneamh, ar líne agus i nDoire Trasna. Osclaímid ár ndoirse le healaíontóirí; cruthaitheoirí; eascaitheoirí agus ceoltóirí ag obair leis an teanga agus leis an chultúr, agus cuirimid club óige lánghaeilge ar fáil fá choinne daoine óga na cathrach seo. Is foirgnimh beo bríomhar iad ár bhfoirgnimh, is spásanna Gaeltachta uirbheacha iad, agus tagann daoine ar ais aríst agus aríst mar gheall ar an mhuintearas atá déanta idir daoine anseo.

We believe very strongly that the Irish language, and Irish culture, is for all, and should be accessible by all, and everything we do is in support of a shared, bilingual, creative community. Every week we welcome 400 learners to our classes, in the Cultúrlann, online and in the Waterside. We open our doors to artists, creators, performers and musicians, and run Derry's only Irish language youth club. Our buildings are a hub of activity, an urban Gaeltacht space, and people return to us again and again because of the community they feel when they come through our doors.

I bhfianaise na gcostas atá ag ardú lenár bhfoirgnimh a choinneáil ar oscailt, tá muid anois fosta ag dul i ngleic leis an laghdú atá le teacht ó cheann dár mbunmhaoinitheoirí, An Chomhairle Cathrach Dhoire agus Cheantar an tSratha Báin. Is carthanacht muid, agus braitheann muid ar thacaíocht ár bpríomh-mhaoinitheoirí, agus síntiúis ón phobal, chun leanúint lenár seirbhísí do phobal na teanga.Tá an gníomh seo ina bhagairt ar chroílár ár gcláir oideachais, ár ngníomhaíochtaí agus ár n-imeachtaí ealaíona agus cultúrtha, agus tionscadail pobail. Tá an áit seo ríthábhachtach do thodhchaí na Gaeilge i nDoire. Tarlaíonn scaipeadh na teanga nuair a bhuailimid le chéile, agus nuair a choinnímid orainn ag bualadh lena chéile, agus tugann ár bhfoirgneamh deis do Ghaeilgeoirí Dhoire agus an Iarthuaisceart é sin a dhéanamh.

In the face of rising costs in keeping our buildings open, we stand at a crossroads, navigating the imminent further reduction of our core funding from Derry City and Strabane District Council. We are a charity, and we rely on the support of our key funders, and donations from the public, to continue our services to the language community. This action threatens the very core of our education programmes, arts and cultural activities and events, and community initiatives. It is vital for the future of the Irish language in Derry that we continue to open our doors. Language transmission happens when we meet each other, and keep meeting each other, and our building gives the Gaeilgeoirí the opportunity to do just that.

Why Your Support Matters

Thosaigh muid amach le rang beag Gaeilge do dhaoine fásta i nDoire 1984, agus tá fréamhú agus fás tagtha anois, go bhfuil muid inár n-ionad tiomnaithe Gaeilge agus cultúrtha féin agus ag cur Club Óige lánghaeilge ar fáil fosta. Tháinig athbheochan na Gaeilge sa chathair agus sna bailte fearainn máguaird mar thoradh díreach ar an phaisean ag gníomhaithe aitiúla chun grá don teanga agus don chultúr a chothú i muintir Dhoire. Sa chathair amháin, tá trí bhunscoil lán-Ghaeilge agus meánscoil le sruth lán-Ghaeilge againn, gan trácht ar na gaelscoileanna agus an mheánscoil Ghaeilge sna ceantair máguaird. Is toradh é seo ar na blianta fada de thiomsú airgid, oideachas agus feachtasaíocht, agus anois tá forbairt idirghlúine an dátheangachais le feiceáil againn san Iarthuaisceart.Tá sé ríthábhachtach go mbeadh spás ag an phobal seo le teacht le chéile inár gcathair. Mar sin féin, tá an laghdú tobann ar an mbunmhaoiniú ina bhagairt dhíreach don spás sin.

What started with a small Irish language class for adults in Derry 1984, has now taken root and grown into our own dedicated Irish language and cultural centre and our dedicated Irish medium Youth Club. The resurgence of the Irish language within the city and its surrounding townlands has come as a direct result of the passion and dedication that its activists have committed to instilling the love for the language and for the culture in its people. In the city alone, we have three Irish medium primary schools and an Irish medium secondary stream, not to mention the Irish medium schools and Irish medium secondary school in the surrounding areas. This has not happened overnight, but is in fact, the fruits of many years of fundraising, education and campaigning, and now we are seeing the inter-generational development of bilingualism in the North West. It is vital that this community has a space to come together in our city. However, the abrupt reduction in core funding now poses a direct threat to that space.
