Everywhere you look, it's pumpkin spice. Coffee, shirts, desserts, and even soap. Apple is like the kid sister to pumpkin.
Apple always gets overlooked. It always takes second place to pumpkin.
I love me some pumpkin. I've made several of my skinny pumpkin spice lattes and have made some pumpkin bread.
But apples are my favorite. I have an orchard, so I have several types of apples. I turn them into pie filling that I can, apple sauce, and more yummy apple filled desserts.
I am still working my way through the box of hotel samples my neighbor gave me. Sure, I could use them as it, but that's no fun.
I'd rather learn how to rebatch soap to turn them into something pretty, like this apple pie soap. I've already made lemon poppy seed muffins with rebatched soap, so this time I made an apple pie spice oatmeal doughnut rebatching soap recipe.
Rebatching soap recipe like this is also called hand milled soap. It's when you take a bar of premade soap, shred it, and turn it into a new bar.
It's a great craft to do if you don't want to make soap from scratch. You don't have to handle lye because the soap is already made with lye. Lye isn't cheap, and you don't want to buy a big container for just one recipe.
Rebatching soap gives it a rougher texture than melt and pour. Both are fairly easy, and you can add more additives to a rebatched soap recipe than you can with melt and pour.
Learning how to rebatch soap is a fun afternoon craft with friends. Older kids can even help, and it's easier to make than cold process soap or even melt and pour soap.

Soap
My neighbor has a job that requires staying in a hotel for weeks or months at a time. He always tells them not to give him more soaps, but they still do several times a week. He saves them and gives them to us since he's single and we have five family members.
You can use any soap with this rebatching soap recipe. The soap that I used is really dry, so that's why it looks powdery.
If you're using a handmade soap or one that's softer, you'll want to shred it. This handmade coconut soap would work really well.
Shredding soap isn't my favorite part, but you can buy bags of shredded soap to make handmilled soap.
Distilled Water
You won't be heating the soap at a high enough temperature to kill germs, so I recommend starting with distilled water.
Grapeseed Oil
I added some grapeseed oil
to dilute my essential oil with and for some extra moisturizing for my skin.
Grapeseed oil is a dry oil, so it won't leave your skin oily. It soaks in quickly since it's a dry oil.
Grapeseed is a good moisturizer. It also helps reduce inflammation and fight free radicals in the skin, so it can help reduce the signs of aging.

Ground Oatmeal
I added some ground oatmeal to exfoliate. It's optional, but it gives the soap a little more texture. I grind oatmeal in my Ninja 
and store it for later.
You can also buy colloidal oatmeal
if you plan on using it in a lot of DIY recipes.
Apple Pie Spice Essential Oil Blend
I used the Right Note Apple Pie Spice essential oil blend. Right Note used to be Crafty Bubbles, so a lot of my oils are still branded Crafty Bubbles.
It's a blend of the following essential oils:
- Cassia
- Nutmeg
- Allspice
- Cardamom
No, there's no apple in it, but it's definitely smells like an apple pie baking. It's actually very refreshing and crisp even without the apple scent.
It's available in their Fall/Winter set with Pumpkin Spice, Christmas Splendor, Eucalyptus Spearmint, Citrus Blast, and Mint Blast.
It's also available in their Holiday Favorites set with Pumpkin Spice, Candy Cane, Gingerbread, Mocha Mint, and Holiday Biscotti.
Ingredients
- 1 cup soak flakes (or buy it preshredded)
- 1/2 cup distilled water
- 1 teaspoon grapeseed oil
- 1/2 tablespoon ground oatmeal
- 20 drops Apple Pie Spice essential oil blend
Equipment
- Double boiler or 2 cup Pyrex measuring cup and canning ring
- Spoon
- Grater
- Doughnut mold

Directions
Step #1
Use a grater to grate the soap to create soap shreds for rebatching soap. Since my soap was really dry, I used a knife to cut down the edges. It flaked and split into smaller pieces. Place in a double boiler or a Pyrex measuring cup.

It's important not to heat your rebatching soap recipe over direct heat, so set the measuring cup on a canning jar ring and set in a pan of water. Add the distilled water to the soap and heat over medium heat.
Step #3
Stir every 5 minutes and heat until the soap mixture looks like mashed potatoes. Mine still had chunks of soap in it. They look like apple chunks in this apple pie soap, so I didn't worry about them melting fully.
Step #4
Remove the Pyrex measuring cup from heat. Add the sweet almond oil, oatmeal, and 20 drops of Apple Pie Spice essential oil blend. You can also add some colorant if you want. I added a little bit of copper colorant. Stir well.
Step #5
At this point, the soap should be cool to the touch. Do not touch it if it seems too hot. Spoon the soap into the mold and use your fingers to pack it down and spread it out. Try to get the top as flat as you can. Let dry overnight.
Step #6
Carefully remove the soaps from the mold. You may have to turn it upside down and tap the bottom with a spoon. If they don't unmold, let them sit longer so more water evaporates.
Step #7
Set the soaps on a cooling rack to let them dry completely. Then use like you would any soap.
This apple pie soap turned out so cute! The bits of soap look like bits of apple. And they smell amazing. And now you know how to rebatch soap!
